Why I'm not a Humean

چکیده
There is an inconsistency between the access we have to our conscious lives and Humean thesis of causal generalism. This was first drawn attention by John Hawthorne, whose argument withstands a number objections. Nevertheless, it has weaknessess. The premise must be weakened if Humeans are compelled accept it, consequently, second will stronger retain validity. I shore up case against Humeanism providing revised premises along with new defences them. show why this also provides lesson for non-Humeans about epistemology relations.

WHO’S AFRAID OF UNDERMINING? Why the Principal Principle might not contradict Humean Supervenience
The Principal Principle (PP) says that, for any proposition A, given any admissible evidence and the proposition that the chance of A is x%, one’s conditional credence in A should be x%. Humean Supervenience (HS) claims that, among possible worlds like ours, no two differ without differing in the spacetime-point-by-spacetime-point arrangement of local properties. David Lewis (1986b, 1994a) has ...
متن کاملHumean Dispositionalism
Humean metaphysics is characterised by a rejection of necessary connections between distinct existences. Dispositionalists claim that there are basic causal powers. The existence of such properties is widely held to be incompatible with the Humean rejection of necessary connections. In this paper I present a novel theory of causal powers that vindicates the dispositionalist claim that causal po...
متن کاملHumean metaphysics versus a metaphysics of powers
The paper considers the opposition between Humean metaphysics and the metaphysics of powers, focusing on laws, probabilities and causation. It argues that within Humean metaphysics, everything is a matter of contingency. Consequently, there is no deep metaphysical difference between a deterministic world and a world in which only probabilistic laws hold. This position is contrasted with the fou...
متن کاملChance and Necessity: from Humean Supervenience to Humean Projection
This paper attempts to develop a projectivistic understanding of chance or objective probability or partial determination. It does so by critically examining David Lewis’ philosophy of probability and his defense of Humean Supervenience, building thereupon the constructive projectivistic alternative, which will basically be a suitable reinterpretation of de Finetti’s position. Any treatment of ...
متن کاملWhy does the central nervous system not regenerate after injury?
A major problem for neuroscientists and clinicians is why the central nervous system shows ineffective regeneration after injury. Injured peripheral nerve fibers reform their connections, whereas those in injured spinal cord never re-grow. Insights into the mechanisms for repair and restoration of function after spinal cord injury have been obtained by experiments showing that injured nerve cel...
